He currently researches competitiveness, innovation and strategic futures. He is developing the Grand Theory of Competitiveness. His past background includes extensive corporate global leadership and senior national/international management experience. He consults across online/offline engaging interactive environments. He has developed staged competencies and capabilities – delivering networked, real-time, business-consumer channel interfacing. His recent research includes big data, digital age leadership, value-deliverance, social networks, corporate and virtual intelligences, cloud business scenarios, major-events management, benchmarking/tracking, and interactive learning. His Acute Futures Group R&D task teams have delivered unique corporate values and virtual learning experiences to both the health and water industries.

He is a professor at the Global Humanistic University in Curaçao and visiting professor at Jilin University and Northeast Normal University in China. He is also Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Cairns Institute, James Cook University, Cairns. Professor Underdown studied Law and Oriental Studies in Australia, Belgium, Portugal and Germany and, in addition to academic appointments in Australia and New Zealand, has held research fellowships in the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, China and South Korea. He has ongoing research interests in law, history, philosophy, management and linguistics. He is admitted to the High Courts of Australia and New Zealand and has practised as both a solicitor and barrister, including as a Special Counsel at a “top tier” law firm. Michael is a member of maritime arbitration panels in Malaysia and China and has headed a multilateral trade facilitation project for UNDP.

At present, he is in the process of submitting his PhD thesis on governence. Stephen holds the Prestige Scholarship that was awarded for academic excellence. He has published on taxonomic theory and is an advocate for phylogenetic nomenclature. He actively engages with citizen scientists assisting them in bringing their research to publication. His early education focused on reading sociology, the histories and classical literature. More recently, he has refocused on reading classical systematics and the integration of evolutionary taxonomic theory with nomenclature. He has owned his own business and has demonstrated skills in transformational leadership practices.
